Red Shoes was started in 2007 by Carolynn Aitken, a trained Textile Designer from Scotland. The question most people ask is ‘Why is the company called Red Shoes when it designs handbags’?
The story is... I was shopping for a pair of new shoes about 5 years ago when I came across a beautiful plain pair of flat pointy red shoes; I wanted a brighter colour of shoe (not even remembering the pair I had on at the time) and so bought them. When wearing them a memory popped into my head of when I was about 7 years old I owned a pair of red patent shoes that I loved to bits. I wore them everyday until they practically fell off my feet. My mum did ask me numerous times to throw them out as she had bought me a new pair (not red patent ones) to replace them but I loved them too much to part.
One day frantically searching for them and not finding them I asked my mum where they were, she told me she had thrown them out, I was devastated! I understand why my mum did it but I was upset for days after.
Would I have remembered that particular memory if I had never bought the red shoes? It just shows you that in your daily life you can do the simplest of things that can trigger a memory from childhood, some good, some bad but that’s how these things work, your memory is a powerful thing.
Red Shoes prints the inside of the handbags for a reason, to keep it secret to the person who owns it. To anybody else it is just a beautifully crafted, leather handbag but to the owner it’s also full of memories, stories and even future goals. Nobody else can see this but every time they open their handbag they are reminded of wonderful memories past to keep them going.
